Set up pre-order

This guide describes how to take pre-orders for products that are out of stock, such as a workshop that is fully booked for now or a course pack that is being reprinted.

Mind has no separate pre-order setting. It switches a variant to pre-order automatically when Shopify tracks its inventory, the available quantity is 0 or less, and the variant is set to Continue selling when out of stock. Shoppers can then still add it to the cart and check out.

Allow selling when out of stock

  1. On your store's Shopify admin page, from the left-side menu, select Products and open the product.
  2. In the Inventory box, make sure Inventory tracked (or Track quantity) is on. If the product has variants, open each variant you want to pre-sell.
  3. Turn on Continue selling when out of stock.
  4. Set the available quantity to 0 (or leave it at 0 if the item is already sold out).
  5. Select Save.

What shoppers see

Once a variant matches those conditions, Mind changes the storefront for it:

  • Add to cart button: the button text changes to Pre-order, on the product page and its sticky add-to-cart bar, in the Featured product section, in quick view and on product cards with an add to cart button.
  • Pre-order note: under the buy buttons on the product page, a note reads Available for pre-order. Delivery may take 10–15 days.
  • Product card badge: product cards that show the sold out badge show a Pre-order badge instead. The badge uses the colors and Corner radius of the Sold out badge group in Theme settings > Badges.
  • Dynamic checkout button: the buy now button stays available, so shoppers can pre-order straight to checkout.

When you restock the variant and the quantity goes above 0, the regular Add to cart text returns and the note and badge disappear.

Change the pre-order text

  1. From the left-side menu, select Sales channels > Online store > Themes.
  2. In the Current theme section, select the ... button, then select Edit default theme content.
  3. Search for pre-order.
  4. Change the Pre order text (the button and badge label) and the Pre order note (the delivery message), for example to give your own delivery time.
  5. Select Save.
caution

Mind treats every out-of-stock variant with Continue selling when out of stock as a pre-order. If you only want to oversell a variant briefly without calling it a pre-order, keep its available quantity above 0 or turn the option off.

tip

Tell shoppers when pre-orders ship in the product description or in a Text block of the Main product section, and update the pre-order note to match your real delivery time.
